uring the 2006-2007 concert season, the Suspicious Cheese Lords are pleased to present previously unrecordedand mostly unsung for the last 500 years or soworks of French composer Jean Mouton (c. 1459-1522). A contemporary of Elzéar Genet, whose works the Cheese Lords explored on their first CD, Maestro di Cappella, Mouton was quite highly regarded in his day. The Medici Pope Leo X was
apparently a fan of Mouton's music as well as Genet's (the latter served as maestro of the papal chapel). Of Mouton's work, 9 magnificat settings, 15 masses, 20 chansons, and more than 100 motets have survived.
e began our celebration of Mouton with his transcendently lovely motet Alleluia, noli flere, Maria, based on an Easter text («Mary, do not weep...»). The Cheese Lords will be "trying on" various Mouton pieces throughout this concert season and are delighted to share our favorites with our audiences.
